Shaker collection [at New York State Library], 1823-1917.

A varied collection of materials relating to the Shakers, particularly those at Watervliet and Mount Lebanon, New York, but embracing other communities as well. Included are record books, minute books, hymns and music, accounting records, inspired messages, diaries, personal correspondence, inventories, maps, and ads for Shaker made products. Among the items found in the collection are the diaries of Ann Buckingham, 1837-1879, recording her activities and those of members of the Watervliet community; medicinal recipes; materials relating to a Peace Conference held in 1905; records and journals of the Watervliet South and Church Families; indentures for children at Watervliet; Polly Lee's journal from Groveland (1843-1844); records of the Watervliet School District no. 14 (1845-1854); documents relating to the Western Reserve; several hymnals; printed materials; accounts of sales of herbs, bonnets, and baskets at Watervliet; expense record for a new meeting house; lists of members; and a wide variety of other materials. The items do not seem to be in any particular order.
